Multi-talented director/producer Batandwa Alperstein, aka TAKEZITO, is a strategic thinker who has worked across Africa and is a natural at representing the popular culture he loves so much. Born to a community health activist and amateur photographer mother in Cape Town, TAKEZITO has a never-ending obsession with the impact of beautifully crafted visuals that capture the rebellious, creative spirit of the youth.
TAKEZITO specializes in documenting popular culture, particularly in Africa, and has worked in more than ten countries across the continent. Whilst completing his Honours in Economics, he realised he craved an insight into human psychology and when given the opportunity, he grabbed a career in advertising as a strategist. It was there that he was first able to combine his creative instincts with his strategic and analytical business mind. TAKEZITO starts any project by immersing himself in the world of the audience and subject matter, getting to the heart of any story or movement through this ethnographic approach. He is constantly striving to be at the forefront of music and entertainment content globally, working alongside artists such as Cassper Nyovest and Damian Marley; and releasing work on global platforms including Hypebeast and TIDAL.
TAKEZITO aims to leave behind a legacy of projects that drive African popular culture to new heights through bold, moving images. He just won a SAFTA for Best International format show.
The latest Standard Bank CIB campaign, is a perfect example of Batandwa translating words on paper to conceptualised visuals to represent Africa, and the spoken word.
